Product Notes

'The Probably Untrue Story of Mary (Who) Had A Little Lamb' serves as a child's introduction to 'clasical' music. It takes as it's starting point Sarah Josepha Hale's poem 'Mary's Lamb.' Almost immediately the story and the music veer way off course. The story is fun AND funny! Musically speaking, 'Mary' is a set of variations on the familiar children's tune 'Mary Had A Little Lamb'. Additionally, lamb and listener are introduced to an important Vivaldi work. In addition there are 'extras' which include 'Spring' (Antonio Vivaldi), 'Vivaldi Plays A Bar Mitzvah Gig' (in Klezmer style), 'Mary and Petunia Sing On Broadway' (Jazz style), 'Mary and Petunia On The Trail' (Cowboy/Country/Barn Dance) and 'Mary and Petunia Go To Church (Sacred). 'The Probably Untrue Story of Mary (who) Had A Little Lamb' is written for full orchestra. 'Spring' is written for violin solo, string orchestra and harp. Each of the rest is scored for an ensemble appropriate to it's genre. For example, 'Mary and Petunia On The Trail' is scored for guitar, two harmonicas, two fiddles and banjo. 'The Probably Untrue Story of Mary (who) Had A Little Lamb' was conceived as an entertainment AND an educational tool, the goal being to introduce children to 'classical' music. The CD includes a Teachers' Guide written by Barbara F. King. The Teachers' Guide follows National Standard Performance Goals and is, therefore, suitable as a series of lesson plans to be used in public schools and home school situations as well as private schools throughout the US. The Teacher's Guide is on the CD in the form of a PDF. The user may access and print the Teacher's Guide using either a PC or Macintosh computer using Acrobat Reader. The final tracks on the CD are comprised of all the tunes found in the original 'Mary' WITHOUT narration. They are intended to be used with the Teacher's Guide. This CD is copy-protected. It will play in most CD players, DVD players, game players, Pcs and MacIntosh computers. Copying is limited to a computer's hard drive. The story, music and narration and musical performance are by Micah Levy. Micah has always loved music. He began his musical life playing the so-called 'French' horn. He took to the instrument quite naturally, winning many prizes and honors and performing professionally by the time he was in high school. After college (California State University, Fullerton) he made his living as a free-lance musician in the Los Angeles area. Pursuing his interest in broadening his musical understanding he took some conducting lessons and was magnetically drawn to the podium. He studied at the New England Conservatory where he received his Master's in Orchestral Conducting as a student of Richard Pittman. For eleven seasons he was the music director of the Orange County Chamber Orchestra and guest-conducted orchestras in the U.S. & abroad. As a way of gaining deeper insight into orchestral scores Micah started writing music. What began, however, as an academic exercise grew into a passion. These days he devotes his time to composition. He has written works for children and adults, for orchestra, chorus, solo voice, solo instruments, piano, and chamber ensembles. It is his passion for music that motivated Micah to write 'The Probably Untrue Story of Mary (who) Had A Little Lamb'. He hopes that children as well as adults will not only delight in his music, but will learn from it and be excited enough to jump headlong into music, as listeners and performers.
