The first waking moments of the day are, for me, often the clearest thoughts of the day. And over a period of weeks, I awoke everyday with the notion that I should make a musical statement of faith. Understand that I had no thought of it the night before, it was simply my very first waking thought. I had never experienced that before, even though I had been in many music projects over the years. Rock bands, dance bands, big bands, club circuits, hotel circuits, floorshows, happy hour sets, weddings, parties, cocktail lounges, festivals and concerts. Why now? I don't know, but here it is. Just had to be done. I wrote some of the songs after we had already begun the recording process and in the end, was delighted at the contributions made by musicians Michael Spencer, Luther Richards, Joshua Duffy, Duane Massey, Cliff Faldowski, Henry Boatwright, Reggie Goebel, Ken Mondshine, Mike Luna, Daniel Saenz, and "my brother from another mother" Britt White. Notice that Britt wrote some of these songs too, oh that boy can write a song. Without Duane Massey, there would not be any live horns on these recordings, a Texas music veteran, his horn work on "Walk With Me" plus, his arranging skills on the other tracks are evidence of why he's always in demand. Rhythm section Mike Spencer (guitar), Luther Richards (bass) and Joshua Duffy (drums) simply rescued a couple of these songs from the abyss with their knack for "bringing the funk". The lead guitar work of Cliff Faldowski on "Say The Word" is the perfect feel for that song, only a talented, veteran player can have that effect on music. Henry Boatwright was making music before I was even born, and those years produced a sound that is uniquely his. Without his saxophone and that funky trio, "Soul Free" would have been dropped from the project. Brian Baker is much more than a sound engineer, he's gifted with producer's ears and the patience of a skilled craftsman. His influence is all over these recordings, and many thanks to Jeff Wells and everyone at Sound Arts for mastering these recordings. Although I did most of the backing vocals myself, there's no way that I could create the blend of my sisters Barbara, Martha and Linda on "Say The Word" and Barbara Pennington was just the right touch on "Then I'll Be Ready". So here is my statement of faith, "Cure". This is what I believe, laid out on a musical canvas, painted by skilled and talented people from different places and times. I hope you'll listen and enjoy, because this comes straight from the soul.
