I started this project with the desire to fuse different types of world and jazz music with traditional drumset. The inspiration for this CD was Michael Spiro's bata drumming and his lifelong dedication to the art form of percussion. We wrote and recorded Bata Coast as a blend of traditional bata drumming and American drumset. And the rest of the music evolved from there. The Big Percussion project is about making drum music. Each track has a theme and unique style. West Coast Snap features brushes on the drumset and reflects my formative years in Los Angeles. My Village, Hippity Hop, DonnaLea Goes Uptown and Big Percussion were written and recorded by Mike Henry, Mike Mizma and James Metcalfe playing djembe, congas, penny whistle, tambourine, slit drums, drumset, shakers, and drum machine. Gabriel Calling and Hedo feature Mike Henry on drumset and Dennis Dotson on trumpet in free-form duets.
