The music on The Clouds Above is a continuation of my musical journey with saxophonist Dick Oatts, following our critically acclaimed release, Storytelling, from 2005. Here you will hear compositions created with my many travels between Denmark and New York in mind. The Clouds Above are the clouds as seen from an airplane. A reflection on the view of open spaces and abstract shapes that makes flying such a beautiful experience. The Clouds Above draws from a wide range of musical inspirations, from American minimalism to European Rock, French Impressionism as well as Russian Romanticism, represented by a theme from Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet. It is my personal goal to create a music that is truly European without being Third Stream or Free Improvisation. Music that has a lyrical touch yet leaves room for improvisations on the high standard of saxophonist Dick Oatts. With these diverse sources of inspiration and lack of reference to the jazz tradition in general, Oatts and I have, through our concerts, come to the conclusion that our music is best described by the term: Creative Music. I hope you will enjoy! Soren Moller: Piano Dick Oatts: Saxophones and Flute.
