Montino Bourbon is a disciple of the renowned Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, with whom he studied for twelve years. Maestro Bourbon has directed the Academy of Universal Music in Montecito for the last 12 years, and teaches the music of India as well as African and World music. He has concertized in Europe, India, and the United States and has been the featured musician in the World Music Festival at California Institute of the Arts, the Estate Musicale Festival in Rome, and the Gandharva festival in Bombay, all to outsdanding accolades.The Rome Messaggero called his performance at the Teatro Stella Complex 'superb.' The Santa Barbara News-Press hailed him as a 'Brilliant Virtuoso'. Known for his excellent teaching style as well as his command of all the facets of Indian and African music, Maestro Bourbon has led the academy's Indian ensemble in many concerts, and has led the African ensemble 'healing fire', which he founded, in over twenty years of performance in various venues, including the Santa Barbara Solstice parade. He continues his work with children, and has taught at many schools in the Santa Barbara area including Crane School, Waldorf School, Santa Barbara Middle School, Dunn School, and many others, as well as youth organizations including the Braille Institute, Transition House, and other institutions in Southern California.
