Look up mutt in the dictionary and you'll find it says. 1: a mongrel. 2: an individual resulting from diverse breeds or strains. 3: cross-between types of persons or things. If those things include a powerful voice, dynamic guitar, and insightful lyrics, then you definitely have Mutt James. On the road, promoting the release of his first solo album 'madeleine', mutt shares with us his adventures and his songs. Be it in a coffee house, festival, pub, or music venue, his passion and humor carry through. 'i love the way he moves his head when he sings. His hair does something indescribable,' claimed one girl from a show in orleans, France. Having played professionally in several countries, and just for the hell of it in a couple more, he and his acoustic guitar have traveled well. Either playing solo or with his band, mutt's music is compelling. Playing a style of music he calls 'progressive acoustic' and drawing from such influences as bruce cockburn, daniel lanois, u2 and bruce springsteen, this self taught musician from the back roads of Michigan's heartland, chooses to write about real issues and real people. Without overly defining, he likes to lead the listener in. 'i write with intention, but leave it loose enough for people to make it their own. I try to inspire what a song is, but allow them to relate to, or interpret it in their own way' says mutt. The sounds of folk, rock, blues, and country occasionally show their diverse strains in the coarse of an evening. Now after returning from 8 months in europe, where he was perfecting his craft with an international audience, experiencing different cultures, and writing songs for his next CD, mutt brings his unique blend of high energy acoustic home. Certainly a breed apart, a diversity of styles and a mongrel always in need of a good hair cut, mutt's passion and desire to entertain is overflowing. Be it the smile of a love song, a tear from a tragedy, or the blushing cheeks of a sultry bawdy tune, mutt leaves his mark and an everlasting impression.
