Product Notes

The Mystic Assignment is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Gerry Saenz. My Singing Heart is his debut ep for Nervous Fish Records. On this release, Gerry, along with Producer and Engineer Eddie Alfaro, were planning on doing a full scaled production (including keyboards, string section, etc.) But upon completing the basic tracks, which included Gerry's guitar work and vocals (and Eddie Alfaro on acoustic and electric percussion )they agreed that the results sounded good and decided not to add any other elements - leaving room for the listener to concentrate on the 'star' of the show - Saenz's strong songwriting, guitar work and vocals. Compared by many to a pre-Islamic Cat Stevens, Gerry can stand side by side with many of today's more innovative artist, such as Badly Drawn Boy or Beck. The journey to now began when Gerry, at the age of 12, received his first guitar. His father, an aspiring musician, taught him his first three chords. Within a year, he was composing his first songs - many songs with just those three chords. Growing up, he would divide his time between Texas (where he was born) and Oregon. Spending most of his teenage years in Oregon, he became a part of the local music scene, paying his dues in a few bands, playing garages and backyard parties. Meanwhile, in his own time, he was secretly crafting his own songs. In the mid-eighties, Gerry permanently moved back to Texas. While there, he decided to put a few of his songs down on tape. Not having any equipment, he resorted to other means to get his ideas down ( from a small cassette recorder to using two boom boxes hooked up and doing many over-dubs!) Fast-foward to the mid-nineties, he met up with a musician named Eli who had some recording equipment, and the two started collaborating on a few of Gerry's originals. Still not completely comfortable with what he was doing, he originally planned on finding a vocalist to front his work. After having no luck in his search, Gerry decided to do it himself. During this time Gerry would keep in touch with his nephew Alex (4 years his minor), who was also a guitarist in his own right (thanks to Gerry passing the torch and teaching him his first chords.) When Gerry would finish something with Eli, he would mail it to Alex in Washington. He would then add his own input and mail it back to Gerry. Eventually, Alex planned on moving to Texas, and they all spoke of the idea of the three putting their heads together and coming up with some great music. When everything finally did come together, everything was off to a good start. They began initial tracking on a few songs and had three complete songs. Then... Alex had to move back to Washington. And eventually, he lost contact with Eli. A little discouraged, and back to square one, he decided to close down shop. He put his guitar away and took a four year hiatus from music. But as Gerry would soon find out....it's hard to leave your dreams behind....and his musical past would soon come knocking again. In 2002, Gerry had a chance meeting with producer and engineer Eddie Alfaro. While discussing their mutual love for The Beatles (and other great music in general), Gerry mentioned a little about his own music. Eddie, impressed with his ideas, and looking for artist to work with, asked to listen to one of his demos. After receiving and listening to it, Eddie immediately contacted Gerry to make arrangements for him to be the newest artist on the Nervous Fish roster. After a few Sessions at Fluid One Studios, the two knew they had something. This brings us full circle to the release of the ep - My Singing Heart. The Mystic Assignment is planning to release a full length album in 2004( with Eddie Alfaro Producing and Engineering.)
