Multi-instrumentalist Newton said he was experimenting with a smooth, jazz-inspired sound for a new collection of tunes he calls JAZZOMAJIC. The slow build up of All The Way speaks to the experiment, as does the easy feel of Right Now. The tittle track which is peppered with Latin percussion, toys with jazz-rock fusion. But there's more to this collection of tunes than a strict interpretation of the title would suggest. On tunes like Microscopic and Ursala, you get the sensation of a story being told, a ballad without words. Another indication is the preponderance of harmonica leads. Newton takes a smooth harp groove through Isn't So, but he kicks up the groove with a touch of the blues with insistent harp leads on Lite of Day and Vamp 21. Some recent airplay has piqued interest in Newton's music, and he is currently working on a new jazz-blues combo with a touch of techno-funk. But don't wait- just pick up JAZZOMAJIC.
