Six originals by Minneapolis composer and jazz guitarist Paul Renz. His new CD ReBop contains one other tune, a raucous 'little bit crazy' Bud Powell tune that Renz has dramatically re-arranged and turned into a gem. Anders Bostrom, flute phenom from NJ, joins Renz and his regular quartet to offer up some crackling pieces of music spanning many styles-bebop, blues, funk and latin. Renz includes an evocative ballad, a tribute to Herb Pomeroy, one of Renz's teachers at Berklee College of Music who passed away in August 2007. While there is plenty of opportunity for individuals to shine on ReBop, it is the collective overall sound that is so attention-getting. Renz and Bostrom interweave their parts and engage in musical conversation as if they've been playing together since they met at Berklee in 1983. (They reunited for this project after not seeing each other for over twenty years) The two are supported by organ/piano wizard Brian Ziemniak, bassist Eric Graham and drummer Nathan Fryett.
