REVIEW HALF A COW REC CO PETER STEIN Songs of love and redemption email: 2glassesofwine@gmail.com We've had this CD for quite some time. I was so impressed with it that it was lent out to a possible sympathetic ear and only recently returned. Hearing it again, I thought this ten track CD from Sydneysider Peter Stein must have gained some attention from somewhere as it is of such high quality - from the songwriting to all the music contained. So I googled it. And find it was self-released in 2006 and can be purchased from CD Baby. From the bio: Bursting through the gritty streets of Sydney, Peter Stein is ready to share the tales of his world. Past 50 years of age, and with no signs of slowing down, this tunesmith has some tales to tell. If you resonate to the music of Woodie Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Daniel Lanois or Tom Waits then you'll like the earthiness and heartfelt music of this troubador. Yep, you can hear Bob Dylan here - especially in the opening track 'Bitch Being Alone' with it's stuck-inside-of-mobile shuffle. Also, in 'Get Ready' with both the melody and lyrics ('you may be a gambler, a womaniser or a thief') being something that Bob would possibly be proud of calling his own as it is such a beautiful song. The instrumental version that follows is stunning too, and works well on it's own. Peter plays all the instruments on Songs of love and redemption except for the drums which are played by Tim Bradley. My favourite is 'Party's Over' - a sad tale of such powerful imagery which reminded me of David Blue, a 'Dylanesque' singer from the early 70s. In fact, it is David Blue who Peter Stein reminds me of the most, especially the vocals. If he was from the USA we'd no doubt be seeing him do the roots and blues festival circuit here in Australia. Calling Lucky Oceans! If you haven't been playing this guy's music on your Radio National show 'The Daily Planet' then get started. It's got all the right rootsy, bluesy, slidey stuff that Lucky likes. Ten out of ten. -ND PETER STEIN Roots/ rock & blues Bursting through the gritty streets of Sydney, Peter Stein is ready to share the tales of his world. Past 50 years of age and with no signs of slowing down this tunesmith has some tales to tell. If you resonate to the music of Woodie Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Daniel Lanois or Tom Waits - then you'll like the earthiness and heartfelt music of this troubador. With over 30 years of experience in the music business Peter is not content to just play music, but is an accomplished writer who has had his songs covered worldwide by such artists as Grammy winners - The Blind Boys of Alabama, jazz singer Vince Jones and achieved chart success with his song Together (SWE). He is a prolific songwriter who has won many songwriting awards, including winning the blues section of the internationally renown song comp ISC in 2004 with his track The Right Side of the Kingdom, winner in the UNISONG song comp. (gospel section) with his song Still Waters & Billboard winner with his song Nothin' to Lose. His songs are still in demand and recently one of his songs were covered by rock band - Howling Bells (2004) produced by Ken Nelson (Coldplay) Skip to the roots: When Stein was growing up he listened to music as diverse as Howlin' Wolf, Leonard Cohen, The Byrds, the cowboy strains of Woodie Guthrie, The Beatles and Dylan. This formed the fusion and foundation of his songwriting skills and insightful lyrics. Early on he formed his own band called Cahoots and played around the traps in Perth. His next band included Divynyls lead guitarist and they played support to The Big O, Roy Orbison He recalls Roy as one of the nicest people he's ever met. 'A polite southern gentleman.' Following that he got married, moved to Melbourne and joined a band called the Renegades. Dylan's management invited Peter to meet Bob after they heard one of his songs in '86 (My People). In the same year another one of his songs called Together charted in Sweden. After dabbling in theatre plays, a publishing contract with Warner Chappell and TV jingles we.... Skip to the present: Peter Stein is ready to rough it out wherever you see him play, Peter's unique blend of roots, blues, country and rock will have audiences everywhere stomping for more ' Album of strong songs and style' Rough Trade,UK ' Thank God for real music...an enjoyable listen' Broadjam USA.
