Piano Stylings of Larry Matthews[CD]
Larry Matthews was born and raised in Boston in a section called Jamaica Plain. When he was eight years old,he began taking piano lessons at the Phil Saltman studios, The Schillinger House, and the Berklee School of Music, and the rest, as they say, is history! Perhaps it was the frequent times he had to forego baseball practice or fight his way through a group of bullies. What ever the reason, the result has been a style unique to Larry. It is crisp, clean, and colorful whether it is jazz, boogie-woogie, or standards.A self proclaimed 'lounge piano player', he has performed at various venues in the greater Boston area for forty years.Long term engagements included the famous Elbola Lounge,a mecca for sport celebrities and the Regatta Restaurant in Cotuit,Massachusetts, one of the few four star restaurants in the area. A teacher in the Boston Public Schools for thirty-nine years, Larry performed here and abroad during summer vacations with stints in Sweden, Spain and Greece. He has played part time at numerous private functions celebrating weddings, anniversaries and other events. He is a popular fixture at country clubs including The Charles River in Newton, Eastward Ho in Chatham and Boston hotels such as the Marriott Residence hotel in Charlestown.Recently retired, he has had the opportunity to devote more time exclusively to the piano. Larry has had the opportunity to play for the Kennedy clan at the Kennedy Compound in Hyannisport and entertain a tourist group at Frank Lloyd Wrght's histoic site at Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona. He will be a featured entertainer at the American Federation of Teachers Convention later this summer. These CD's are a new venture after a number of fans requested some of his music be recorded for them. He will shortly appear at an invitational festival and offer them for public sale for the first time. A devoted golfer and Civil War buff, he has homes in Milton,Massachusetts and Mashpee on Cape Cod.
