FROM rapping and beat boxing on the dusty street corners of Arcadia (South Africa), gospel hip-hop artist Q, also known as Quintess Julie has come a long way and has finally launched his debut album called Change. The humble young man aims to do what the title track suggests, to help change the lives of youngsters facing many difficulties in their community. 'I grew up where we had to face gangsterism and drug and alcohol abuse every day. I remember how we had to find another way home from primary school, because some kids from the neighborhood would come to the school and fight with us. It was hard growing up 'like that, but it also inspired me to rise above it all.' When he was a teenager he started a group called the Gladiators with two friends, and they entered and won a music competition, Sterre 2000. They were featured on the then popular teenage television programme, Tekkies. He left music for a while to focus on his studies, but he never forgot about his dream of pursuing a musical career. Today he is a qualified technical officer at Orion Telecom and does his music part-time. Q regularly appears at events and charity functions, and is involved in the Spirit of Unity Ministries rehabilitation programme where was called to be a prophet. The compiling of the album took him about eight months, he says, and was involved in all aspects, including the funding. The twelve tracks include some of the music he has been working on for years. 'My music appeals to all people, and I think it will definitely inspire and encourage them to make that spiritual change,' he says. Q collaborated with some popular local artists who feature on the the album. Says fellow rapper and featured artist on Change, Jbux, "I think Change is definitely going to make waves in the area that it's aimed at; It's the beginning of something good, on a whole new level, and Q's overall approach to the making of the album was really good. Some of the songs, like 'Ry'and 'Momma", will become anthems in our areas.' Q with his debut CD Change:.
