Complete Piano Works[CD]
~ S. Rachmaninoff(Boxed Set, 9PC)
From the early compositions from the 1890s up to the late great works as the Corelli Variations Sergei Rachmaninoff has come a long way as a composer. He first stood under the strong influence of Chopin and Liszt, also by Anton Rubinstein and other pianists the generation before him. He had studied together with Alexander Scriabin with Nikolai Zverev, who as was customary took over his upbringing and education. Rachmaninoff was later indisputably the best pianist of his time, not only with his own works, which he was able to play in an incomparable manner. He was in demand as a pianist, as temporarily succeeded this as a composer, he was also a sought-after and highly talented conductor, which is very little known today. His wonderful preludes for piano (especially the world famous Prelude Op. 3, No. 2 in C-sharp minor), his Études-tableaux, his moment musiceaux and other works are now standard repertoire for each soloist. Nevertheless, there are few of these cycles often very popular works, which will be played in the concerts. Here you can hear all the cycles and individual works bundled completely. This is a high dose of Russian piano-romance that is worthwhile in any case. The little-known Chopin Variations and the first Sonata are offered here in an excellent interpretation. The soloists are big names. Michael Ponti was one of the most exciting soloists of his time.
