She has sold nearly half a million albums and has received thousands of testimonials as to the healing effects of her music. 'Classically based serenity' as one distributor describes it. 'Let the harmonious tones of Radhika's flute breeze into your heart like a gentle caress.' Stephen Hill, Music from the Hearts of Space Biography: Radhika Miller was born and raised in San Francisco, the fifth of nine children. Her parents encouraged a creative childhood in a home complete with puppet theater, ballet bars, pianos, painting easels, dance room with a real juke box, and family sing-a-longs led by a mother who is a professional soprano as well as an accomplished pianist. At age six, Radhika started her own piano lessons. By nine she had discovered the works of Stravinsky and Bartok, whose modern tones spoke to her in a language that sparked an early interest in composing. Her love of choral music led to singing with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus where she met Louis Magor, the renowned conductor. Under his mentorship, she found an artistic model of pure tone that she emulates today in her flute playing. 'It was on a whim,' says Radhika, 'that I began playing the flute in college. Inspired by a passage about the flute in a yoga book, I decided to try one, find a good teacher and spend about six hours a day studying it.' By the end of her first year she was studying at the Academie International in France, with Jean Pierre-Rampal. Three years later she graduated from San Francisco State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Music, with an emphasis in flute, composition, and choral music. A desire to link the human voice with an instrument and to unite imagination with the sounds and beauty of nature, has led her into the realm of what she calls 'the singing flute', which combines her love of nature and choral music with an emotional rendition of music rather than mere technical virtuosity. Hard pressed to find flute music (outside of Bach) that spoke to her heart's calling, Ms. Miller began to transcribe soprano parts from sacred music scores, spirituals and choral works for her own performance on flute with harp, piano and cello accompaniment and to create her own prayerful, uplifting compositions. Ms. Miller's recording career began when the great yoga master, Swami Satchidananda, suggested she make a recording of her flute music so that people could become peaceful, meditative and relaxed. She took his advice and created 'Lotus Love Call' - classically based serenity with alto and C flutes, keyboards, nature sounds and boodle bowls. Her music was so well received she created a second release 'Sunlit Reverie' which became a New Age music classic, selling over 250,000 without advertising. The album is a blend of Irish, Gregorian Chant, classical and original tunes for harp and flute, piano and nature sounds. 'Within the Wind' came out of her love for world music. Exotic improvisations with kalimbas, Chinese harp, sitar, water phone, angklung and flutes. 'The Lark's Bride' sets a romantic mood with Renaissance harp and flute melodies as well as stunning improvisational duets with cellist Eugene Friesen. Recorded in the world's largest cathedral 'Origins' will lift your spirits as you listen to joyous strains of recorders, flutes, percussion, strings, piano and organ. 'Gems of Grace' reveals Radhika's orchestral talents as she includes French horn and strings collaborating with cellist David Darling and pianist, Allaudin Mathieu in one of her most relaxing CD's. 'Here and Faraway' is a union of great players, Mike Marshall, Edgar Meyer, John Stewart, David Darling, Michelle Sell and Tony D'Anna. 'Blossoms in the Snow' is what Tower Pulse described as 'the best holiday music ever'. Radhika combines medieval instruments (rebec, viele, Celtic harp) with magical renditions of traditional carols. Louis Magor, David Darling, Peter Rowan, Shira Kammen, Tony D'Anna and others join in the festive celebration of the season. Radhika's love of Impressionism and ballet inspired her 'Arabesque' CD. It includes several originals for flute, harp, cello and piano. When her beloved teacher passed away, Radhika recorded 'Heaven' honoring Swami Satchidananda and his contribution to world peace. Beautiful melodies for alto flute, cello, piano, mandolin are mostly original with some favorite Irish and spirituals. With all her years of teaching experience and love of children's music, Ms. Miller created the Parents' Choice Award winning album 'Laughing Waters'. She went to Nashville to work with some of bluegrass greats Jerry Douglas and Edgar Meyer, recorded tongue twisters with Peter Rowan, stories with Fred Curchack and all together created some of the highest form of ridiculous fun. Includes her song 'Singin the States'. Teachers, parents and kids love it! Radhika's music has appeared on several compilation albums, most noteworthy as the opening for Hearts of Space's best selling 'Celtic Twilight'. Ms. Miller is an accredited music educator, and is considered a master teacher in her field. She has created music and dance curriculums for the California public school system and has offered several teacher training in-services. She has taught 'Musicality for Dancers' as part of Marin Ballet's Guest Master Series and was founder and artistic director of YOUNG IMAGINATIONS, a non-profit multi-cultural arts education company dedicated to providing inspired music, dance and drama education to thousands of school children. Radhika is also an experienced yoga instructor having taught in several universities, homes for the elderly and Girl Scout groups in the US and Europe (she is comfortable speaking French, and some Italian and Swiss German). Along with her husband and two children, Radhika is an enthusiastic nature lover on hiking trails or in the garden of her Northern California home.
