Product Notes

Rambler 454 is opening up the garage and letting out their new CD, Gabe. Leaping out the doors like a vintage hot rod with a new engine, this one does not stop racing until it reaches the first pub. This 5 song EP was supposed to sound something like an old bluesy Rolling Stones record complete with horn sections, heaps of backing vocals and dirty guitars. Too bad we ran out of money to get much past the dirty guitars. To tell the story of the recording of Gabe, the band began with big plans for their third CD. Rambler 454's debut, Talk Down The Sky was hailed as 'barroom brilliance' while the follow up No Name Café earned the award Best Band To Have on a Road Trip. So, armed with the success of those two CDs, invitations to play at conferences far and wide, visits by indie record label owners, and requests to join biiger artists on tour, the boys were determined to get the biggest and best recordings possible. Then, just before recordings were to begin, one of their friends and long time fan got arrested for DUI. Sympathetic to a fault, the band decided to set aside some of their money to help him out. Unbelievably, this guy had his case thrown out of court and the incident did not go on his record. To celebrate, the band and a few fans hit the local bar and spent the money that was supposed to go to the legal fund. So the band decided to forego recording at a big studio and went back into Cooter's basement - where they recorded the first two CDs. The band had laid down basic tracks for five songs when the same fan got hit for another DUI. Now, this fan had been applying for jobs as a police officer at the time. So it was kind of funny that the arresting officer was also the guy that had interviewed our fan for a job. No getting out of this one, so the band pitched in some more money for a lawyer and decided to use a harmonica payer instead of a horn section for several songs on the CD. Somehow, the fan got out of this DUI. Well the band was almost done with recording their new CD and just needed to get the backing vocals and hire a mastering house to finish the CD when, you guessed it, the same fan got arrested a third time. This time the entire arrest was caught on dash cam. The band again helped out financially. As far as the CD was concerned, Rambler 454 decided to use multiple tracks of Cooter's wife on some backing vocals and to try to master the CD themselves. The band was left with $480 to finish the recording and press the CDs. Well, the fan got out of this last DUI and was allowed to keep the dash cam video of the arrest. After the trial he threw a party at his house and kept the video on loop all night. Probably using Rambler 454's money for the party. From big dreams of a huge recording to the reality of a simple recording all because of their dedication to one fan, Rambler 454 named the new EP in honor of him. In truth, the CD rings truer than if the band had added all of those extra studio tricks. As one reviewer put it, 'Adding production studio sheen to a Rambler 454 recording would be like wearing a tuxedo to a bar brawl'. What else would you expect from a band that formed in an autobody shop and recorded their first CD in 6 days. Each song on Gabe is a rocker performed with abandon and recorded like tomorrow doesn't matter. Now we're just hoping to speed through the EP without getting caught.
