Product Notes

Brocade, by The Gypsy Nomads aka Frenchy and the Punk guitarist Scott Helland, is a collection of 14 diverse instrumentals blending a visceral mix of celtic, modern folk, neoclassical styles and metal influences. Possessing a medieval flavor and a movie soundtrack mystique, this new CD is dominated by stark, layered acoustic and bass guitar melodies and rhythms. The upbeat and driving songs subtly reveal Helland's bass playing past in metal and punk bands*. Scott writes songs with an emphasis on melody and feel creating a strong lyrical quality without the use of words. Fans of artists such as Loreena McKennitt, Blackmore's Night and Jethro Tull will connect with Brocade; a spirited journey of playfully diverse instrumentals. Brocade is also an enhanced CD, viewable on any computer, featuring a 9 minute video complete with in-studio footage, fun out-takes, interviews and a rambunctious bonus MP3 remix of the song 'Fire, Bow and Brimstone.' The archetypal drawings by Helland on the cover and throughout the CD combine medieval, and earthy mythological themes and connect the music and spirit of the record together. The humorous and intriguing titles of the songs give an added ingredient and complements the spiritedness of Brocade. Titles like; 'Travelin' Band of Gypsy Nomads', 'Harry Callahan Meets Josey Wales' inspired by Clint Eastwood and the characters he portrayed. 'Spanish Castles Made of Magic Sand', 'Heavy Feathers', 'Bustling Metropolis' written for the town he grew up in and where the CD was recorded; Westfield MA., 'Galloping Glory' complete with galloping horses and pounding drums, 'Midnight Capricorn' the CD's lugubrious bass guitar instrumental, 'The People You Miss are Ok' a beautiful homage with guest violinist, 'Renascent', 'A Free Ride to the Sun', 'Celestial Reasons', 'Drunk Mariner' and the title track 'Brocade'. About Scott Helland: Scott Helland is an American-born guitarist, bassist and songwriter. He is also the guitarist for the Euro American New York based duo, Frenchy and the Punk, who perform a non-traditional eclectic mix of musical styles. (Folk, Punk, Cabaret). His solo instrumental compositions meld a visceral mix of rock, alternative folk, Spanish, and neo classical styles into a 'subtle and densely layered acoustic guitar feast all bound together by an un-deniable punk sensibility.' Live, he utilizes the loop pedal to create his melodic acoustic soundscapes. As a teenager in the 80s, Helland played bass in punk and metal bands, released several critically acclaimed underground records, and toured in the US, Canada, and South America. He became a solo musician in 1996 and turned to the acoustic guitar as his instrument of choice. His solo recordings are filled with melodic and playfully diverse instrumentals that are influenced by his eclectic musical past. In the eighties and nineties, Helland played bass guitar with the bombastic Western MA hardcore punk bands Deep Wound, (which included Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis and Lou Barlow,) and Outpatients (with his brother Vis Helland). Both bands released critically acclaimed underground recordings that still sell today to punk record collectors and aficionados of the hardcore music scene here in the U.S, Asia and Europe. Both bands have also been chronicled in the recent books American Hardcore; A Tribal History, Choosing Death; The Improbable History of Death Metal and Grind Core and F***ed Up and Photocopied; Art of the Punk Movement. Deep Wound is also listed in the Encyclopedia of Punk. Helland formed Frenchy and the Punk with French born singer Samantha Stephenson in 2005. The unlikely pairing has since released 6 full-length CDs, produced a live concert DVD and have performed all across the U.S. and in Europe. In May 2012, Yahoo Music called them one of the top 25 duos in the US. Their show is a carnival of two that will take you from Paris to CBGBs and back again. A rollicking flapper folkpunk cabaret with cleverly crafted songs, Taiko meets Rio de Janeiro pounding drum instrumentals and true DIY attitude.
