Sunsets & Silhouettes / Various[CD]
Following up 2002's critically acclaimed 21 song compilation, 'Dreaming Up The Perfect Pop,' the folks at Planting Seeds Records deliver another fine collection of timeless, essential, cool music. 18 tracks make up their latest offering titled 'SUNSETS & SILHOUETTES' (PSRCD-031) - which provides an extraordinary line-up of songs all ideal for your weekend escape from the city or perhaps those long introspective drives at dusk. This is the perfect soundtrack for those very moments. 'Sunsets and Silhouettes' features an ensemble of today's most brilliant artists. Planting Seeds' very own staples are accounted for: PINKIE, featuring Alex Sharkey of Sarah Records band BRIGHTER, strum out 'She's Dead'; ASTROPOP 3, preach the perfect anthem of encouragement with their track 'Anything'; XAVIER PELLEUF collaborates with Alex Sharkey on the heartfelt acoustic ballad 'Fourth of July'; MICHAEL BARRETT (who's found some time in THE ESSEX GREEN and THE LADYBUG TRANSISTOR) and DAKOTA SUITE (which features help from members of The American Music Club), contribute country tinged tracks, both in 'Loving Arms' and 'All That I Can Hold Near,' the compilation's closing tracks. In addition, true rock champions hidden in neat little packages also shine on with an eclectic and international flare - MARK GARDENER (formerly of RIDE) hits back with the rhythm heavy rocker 'Snow in Mexico.' THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN's Reid brothers showcase their latest offerings: William Reid teams with sister Linda and her new band SISTER VANILLA, which contribute their lost in an afternoon daydream 'Pastel Blue.' FREEHEAT features Jim Reid, Ben Lurie and Co., and picks up where JAMC left off - contributing a Classic Reid song 'Back On The Water.' Fellow Scotland Sweethearts, CAMERA OBSCURA appear with their live acoustic version of 'Books Written For Girls.' California favorites FONDA, who you may remember from the soundtrack to the motion picture 'Spy Kids,' opens the record with the glowing 'I Can Still Hear Our Song.' Bringing back those sweet sounds of Southern California in the early 1970's are Philadelphia's own ASTEROID NO. 4 with their pedal steel/harmonica driven tune 'Back Where I Belong'. 1960's flavored delights of THE SIXTH GREAT LAKE ('Everything is White'), The Voyces ('Don't Want To Go Back') and the AUTUMN LEAVES ('See The Light Again') appear alongside our favorite ladies of the music underground - TRACY SHEDD, carrying the Teenbeat Records torch with her upbeat composition 'Airplane' and LINDA DRAPER, who's fabulous song 'Colorblind' was produced by Kramer ( Galaxie 500, Low, Urge Overkill, and countless other classics). Not to be forgotten are stellar tracks from England's latest offerings. FIEL GARVIE's 'I Didn't Say' features an amalgam of Cocteau Twins and 1990's shoegaze, while Oxford' s GOLDRUSH presents a fantastic new British rock sound on 'Counting Song.' 'Sunsets and Silhouettes' captures the essence of a sunset drive through the Mojave Desert and those endless blue sky days that stand still in your mind. Or maybe weaves with subtle moments encapsulating memories of your first crush or your first broken heart. Whatever it may represent, enjoy another exceptional collection by Planting Seeds Records - the open road awaits...
