Piano Concerto 1 & 1812 Overture[CD]
~ Arkady Sevidov
Composer Piotr Tchaikovsky was initially criticized for his masterpiece the "1812 Overture" as being too zealously patriotic. Indeed, the musical theme about the Russian army turning back Napoleon's invasion is strong, but the music over the years has taken on a sound of universal joy, victory and celebration-so much so that it is a popular number at many Fourth of July celebrations. (Talk about a delicious irony-a Russian victory song played on an American holiday.) Nevertheless, it sounds remarkable with conductor Samuel Friedmann leading the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra. Also, pianist Akrady Sevidov is amazing through the other song on this recording, "Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-Flat Minor."
