Product Notes

Liner Notes - In 1996 while living in Westport, Connecticut I formed PICK 3, a small group of like-minded individuals, all with a Passion for Pickin'. We played the New York tri-state area and released our first recording in 1997. It came to a halt in 1998 when my family moved up to Gloucester, Massachusetts, on Cape Ann, where I found a really vibrant music scene. There, Pat Conlon and I met, and over the next few years Pick 3 started playing again with Pat and I working out some new vocal parts. Nick Aparo has been with us a little over a year. I had the pleasure of playing with Nate Leath and Dana King on various occasions, but prior to this taping they had never met before. PICK 3 usually plays a good mix of Bluegrass, Celtic, Swing, Country, Western Swing, and Blues Music. On this particular evening we played mostly bluegrass since banjo and fiddle are such welcome additions that really fill out that material. The pickers assembled for this session make good music on the fly due to their sensitivity, and willingness to take risks. Through their playing they push the music in new directions while simultaneously remaining supportive. These boys can jam! This was necessary in the absence of true arrangements, as most arranging was accomplished impromptu with nothing more than a nod of a head. We were all looking forward to a fun night, and although Pick 3 had never played as a five-piece, I thought it might be worth recording. We did so by taking a feed directly from the PA's soundboard into a stereo minidisk recorder, and having only two tracks to work with, there was no significant editing possible. The result is honest music, just like being there, and I think we managed to capture a sense of the good energy we all felt that evening. Listening to this performance, it seems we all subscribe to the tenant 'if you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.' We were so pleased with this 1st effort, we decided to release it on this CD and have since booked numerous jobs to play in this format. PICK 3 performs on a monthly basis at the 'The Rhumb Line', a small tavern where it's casual atmosphere encourages us to try new things. For a long time, it has been a place in Gloucester where locals meet, enjoy good food, and like nowhere else around, The Rhumb Line supports live music. Michael Gallagher has worked behind the bar for over 20 years, has been there for every one of our shows, and greatly contributes to the club's warm inviting atmosphere. We extend a hearty thank you to all those who came to see us at the Rhumb Line. We had a ball making this music; we hope you enjoyed listening. TOM EATON - Bios - Tom Eaton (guitar & vocals) of Gloucester has brought his music to more than fifteen foreign countries, traveled through Europe, the Caribbean and the Americas performing and learning from the local musicians he met along the way. Tom studied music and voice at Colorado State University, and jazz with Chuck Wayne. He toured extensively with a variety of bluegrass bands from the Rocky Mountain region; first as a founding member of 'Everybody & His Brother' and then went on to start 'Generic Bluegrass'. After moving east Tom played with two acoustic string bands in the New York tri-state area ('Out To Lunch' for 20 years! ...Tom's extended family). Tom's prowess on the fretboard has brought him into a variety of performance venues including television, radio, festivals, concerts, and recording projects. Pat Conlon (mandolin, harmonica, & vocals) of West Gloucester, Massachusetts has been a performer on the local Cape Ann music scene for over thirty years. He has performed a wide variety of musical genres and styles including blues, rock, swing music, as well as bluegrass. Nick Aparo (bass) of South Hamilton, Massachusetts did his undergraduate and graduate classical studies at Boston University with a major in performance on bass. He studied with Henry Portnoi & Edwin Barker (former and present principal bassists for the Boston Symphony Orchestra), and studies currently with jazz pedagogue, Charlie Banacos. When he's not having fun with with PICK 3, Nick performs these days playing classical, jazz, blues, and other styles with both big and small groups. These current musical activities include playing with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and his own swing groups and chamber ensembles. While PICK 3 has won critical acclaim as a trio, they also enjoy collaborations and often play as a larger group. PICK 3 performed most of 2001 with Fozzie Hill, and then the summer of 2002 with Bruce Kirshner from Queens, NY on fiddle and vocals. Since then they have been working frequently with Nate Leath on fiddle. Nate is a truly gifted fiddler from North Carolina who recently moved to Boston to study at Berklee. He makes a great contribution with his terrific technique, 'feel', and inventiveness. At the beginning of 2003 Dana King of Essex, Massachusetts started sitting in as well. Dana has played the five-string banjo since the age of twelve. His style is deeply rooted in the Scruggs tradition influenced by early training in turn of century classical banjo. He has studied with progressive banjo masters Tony Trischka and Bill Keith and more recently hosted workshops with some of his mentors. Dana has toured and recorded as a member of Connecticut- based Traver Hollow and currently Massachusetts-based Old Cold Tater. They have played throughout the United States, Canada, Virgin Islands and Japan.
