Volume two of the recordings of Hazel Scott presented in chronological order, opens with an extended session for Signature. Label owner and producer Bob Thiele often recorded artists that others considered "difficult" or "impossible to sell". He also recorded Hazel Scott with a studio band but the resulting music leaves a rather ambiguous impression - besides a linguistically enigmatic German title for the last track of this date. Both quartet/trio sessions for Columbia show two sides of the artists: throwaway boogies alongside exquisite performances like "Dancing on the Ceiling" or the important tribute to "Mary Lou" Williams. Scott adored her both as a female African-American pioneer and as an artist.
