The Australian-British pop icon's first album in five years is a tour de force, a deeply personal record to remind us precisely why we fell in love with her in the first place. It comes as the cultural zeitgeist shifts and pop edges back towards the dancefloor, it's direction feeling in tune with the sophisticated pop, disco and house leanings of Robyn. The single 'Upside Down' opens with a flourish of bright synths and energetic percussion, with Natalie's distinctive lilt floating above. As she reaches the chorus, it grows brighter - kaleidoscopic, shimmering - and we hear her relinquishing control, and ultimately finding clarity in a song which came from a feeling of shame surrounding her mental health. Following the Top 10 comeback achieved with 2021's 'Firebird', 'Algorithm' is a record in which Natalie is reinvigorated and raring to go - apt reward for pushing herself creatively with confessional themes of vulnerability and funding the project entirely independently.
