Product Notes

The Bonita label was founded in Miami sometime in the late 1950s/early 1960s as a vehicle to expose great Cuban artists and others to the American public, and especially for the large migrant population that settled there after the Cuban embargo of 1959. The very first release on the label featured the extraordinary singer Orlando Contreras who was making big waves in New York at the time with the bolero moruno Amigo de Que?, which reached #1 on the New York Hit Parade, and others like Castillo en las Nubes, Por Tu Ausencia, Inmenso Mar, which left a lasting impression and demonstrated the genius of Contreras, who perfectly masters any folkloric genre. In any field Contreras is a winner, even when performing a bolero with a popular flavor, such as when he sings a Guaguancó, a Guajira or any type of musical work. A rare classic, Amigo de Que?, originally released around 1960, has been newly remastered for this exclusive release.
