This Japan-exclusive release combines a live recording from the Newport Jazz Festival on July 3, 1958, tracks 1 through 7, with studio sessions recorded in May 1958, tracks 8 through 11, featuring the same lineup that would later record Kind of Blue, capturing a pivotal moment in Miles Davis' career following band changes that saw Jimmy Cobb replace Philly Joe Jones on drums and Bill Evans replace Red Garland on piano, with recordings made in May and a landmark Newport performance in July, eight months before Kind of Blue sessions began, and with tracks 8 through 11 previously issued in Japan on the 1979 hit album 1958 Miles with jacket art by Masuo Ikeda, presented here as a Limited Edition SA-CD Hybrid in stereo housed in a 7-inch paper jacket, featuring performances by Miles Davis on trumpet, Cannonball Adderley on alto saxophone, John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Bill Evans on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums, with the complete tracklist consisting of "Introduction, " "A Lew Cha, " "Straight, No Chaser, " "Flan Dance, " "Two Bass Hit, " "Bye Bye Blackbird, " "The Theme, " "On Green Dolphin Street, " "Flan Dance, " "Stella by Starlight, " and "Love for Sale, " recorded live at Newport for tracks 1 through 7 and at Columbia 30th Street Studio in New York on May 26, 1958, for tracks 8 through 11.
