Product Notes

Bernard Pulham and Gabriel Keen give a bravura performance of Stravinsky's original Rite of Spring (composer's 4 hand piano version) arranged for 2 concert grand pianos; exactly 100 years after the staged premiere in Paris. The Rite of Spring remains as exciting and shocking as when it was first performed in May 1913, and this record is brilliantly recorded to achieve a big orchestra-matching sound from the instruments. The highly rhythmic performance demonstrates pianistic speed and stamina, as well as moments of exquisite delicacy. Utilising the full dynamic range of 24-bit mastering with this production, Bernard Pulham and Gabriel Keen have been able to convey all of the artistic expression of their acclaimed Centenary performances. The CD is undoubtedly a dazzlng aural experience. Stravinsky's famous, and also infamous Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du Printemps) was first written for Diaghilev's Ballets Russe and premiered in Paris on the 29th May in 1913. Subtitled 'Scenes of Pagan Russia' the ballet had as it's theme a tribal sacrifice of a young girl to the ancient God of Spring. The premiere was both a public scandal and an artistic revolution. Star dancer Valsav Nijinsky had created a choreography that demanded the dancers adopt strange and painful postures with wild exhausting leaps. The costumes were peasant like and unflattering to the ballerinas, while the music was by far the most rhythmically difficult and discordant ever put before an orchestra. Yet Stravinsky knew exactly what he was doing and this exhilarating creation has become a very popular orchestral showpiece with new versions and revivals of the ballet celebrated around the world. Back in 1913, at the time that his new music for orchestra of 100 players divided public and critical opinion, Stravinsky had the idea of making an ingenious piano four-hand ( duet ) version. This piano arrangement of the complete score let a wider public discover the piece, and also served to assist ballet rehearsals. Nowadays the piano version is often played in concert, and adventurous pianists enjoy using two separate pianos where even more of the orchestral detail can be included. This recording is based on the Composers original 1913 published arrangement, which was once played through in private by Stravinsky and friend Claude Debussy! As you will hear, the present performers have interpreted this classic with extra colour and vitality, to make a fitting celebration of Stavinsky's legendary masterpiece on it's 100th anniversary. If you are one of the many who love the Rite of Spring you will be thrilled by this spectacular studio recording. On this CD Bernard Pulham plays the Primo part, leftwards on the stereo image, while Gabriel Keen plays the Secondo part, towards the right.
