The Coen Brothers' debut unfolds as a sultry, Texas-set noir steeped in greed, suspicion, and fatal misunderstanding. A jealous bar owner hires a sleazy private detective to kill his unfaithful wife and her lover-only to be double-crossed himself. From there, a chain of botched deceptions spirals into violence, as each player acts on assumptions that prove disastrously wrong. Stark visuals and rising tensions drive this thriller, with stellar performances by Frances McDormand, John Getz, Dan Hedaya, and M. Emmet Walsh. 96 min.
