Inspired by Bach as well as the avant-garde, by Brazilian folk traditions as well as the modern sounds of Rio, Villa-Lobos created an astonishing array of pieces. You'll find a tremendous variety of tonal colors, melodies, harmonic adventures and personal expressions in his string quartets alone. He composed 17 of them across 42 years (1915-57), and today they are as highly regarded as those of Bartok and Shostakovich. Here, they are performed by the premier proponent of Latin American music for string quartet, the Cuarteto Latin-American!
