Paul Newman shines as Lucas Jackson, a rebellious convict sentenced to a brutal 1940s Florida chain gang. Facing a sadistic warden and grueling labor, Luke earns fellow prisoners' respect-especially Dragline (Oscar-winner George Kennedy)-but the system won't be defied. With iconic moments (an egg-eating contest and a "failure to communicate") and strong support (Strother Martin, Morgan Woodward), this classic pits unbreakable spirit against crushing authority. Directed by Stuart Rosenberg, scripted by novelist Donn Pearce and Frank Pierson. 126 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English. Region Free
