Many great actors-including Dustin Hoffman-have played Willy Loman, the feckless protagonist of Arthur Miller's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, but none has equaled the heartfelt performance given by Fredric March in this definitive 1951 screen adaptation. March makes you feel Willy's multiple failures and lament the death of his dreams. He has excellent support, especially from Dunnock as his long-suffering wife and McCarthy and Mitchell as his disillusioned sons, and director Benedek displays a keen understanding of the material.
