Product Notes
One of the secret weapons in the Society Hill Orchestra's impressive arsenal, keyboardist and vocalist Charles "Clef" Lundy has lent his unique talents to hundreds of sessions, providing expert backing to the wide range of artists in the Society Hill family and as a main cog in the core unit of the Ingram Brothers band. Although he is most often associated with the Philly Soul genre, Lundy also has a deep passion for gospel music. With just his voice and piano, Charles delivers an impassioned version of the spiritual "Deep River." One of the most popular of all early African American spirituals, "Deep River" has been called "perhaps the best known and best-loved spiritual." The song's popularity has inspired many cover versions by a wide range of artists including Barbara Streisand, Bobby Womack, Mahalia Jackson, Johnny Mathis, Odetta, Tommy Dorsey, Marian Anderson, Paul Robeson and countless others. The song was performed at the funeral of the late Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg by opera singer Denyce Graves. A true labor of love, Lundy's stripped-down version let's the true intention of the beloved spiritual shine through... a man alone, conversing with the divine. .
