Description

A blazing Hollywood spotlight shines ever so brightly on this classic film star whose small physical stature was in direct defiance to his huge and commanding presence on the silver screen. Edward G. Robinson was not only known for powerful performances as gangsters and tough guys evading the law, but these two features will clearly demonstrate his great diverse acting skills in a whole different genre - War Dramas. First up is "Destroyer" (Glenn Ford, Marguerite Chapman. 1943/99 min), in which the John Paul Jones, a brand new US Navy destroyer, initially fails her sea trials and is assigned to doing mail runs. But when the vessel is torpedoed by a Japanese sub and on the verge of sinking, the captain and crew realign themselves to do battle and sink the sub. In "Mr. Winkle Goes to War" (Ruth Warrick, Ted Donaldson. 1944/80 min), the meek and extremely henpecked, boss-pecked bank clerk, Wilbert Winkle, gets drafted during WWII. Winkle, always taking pills for a number of questionable ailments, goes through an amazing transformation in the Army and when it counts the most, unexpectedly emerges as a hero during the heat of battle in the South Pacific.
