Haec Maiestas was formed in December 2003. All members of the group attend Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois for various reasons. The group cites the influences of many people, including jón þor birgisson, jeff back, jeff buckley, andy wallace, joseph heller, j keroauc, w burroughs, nick drake, jeff tweedy, fiona apple, beck, rimbaud, oscar wilde, sartre, steve reich plus many, many, many more.
