Product Notes
Best remembered for his immortal hit "Minnie the Moocher" and his reign as the king of the Cotton Club, Cab Calloway remained a vibrant and adaptable performer long after the big band era had passed. This collection traces Calloway's recording career throughout the 1950s, a decade in which he successfully embraced changing musical tastes while retaining the charisma, humour and unmistakable vocal style that made him a legend. Featuring rare singles for Bell, ABC-Paramount and Gone, alongside highlights from the albums Blackbirds of 1928, Cotton Club Revue 1958 and the celebrated stereo LP Hi-De-Hi-De-Ho, the set finds Calloway tackling pop standards, rhythm and blues, Broadway favourites and fresh recordings of his signature classics. From "Such A Night", "Unchained Melody" and "Learning The Blues" to "St. James Infirmary", "Stormy Weather", "The Jumpin' Jive" and a stereo remake of "Minnie the Moocher", these recordings reveal a master entertainer at the peak of his post-war powers. A fascinating portrait of one of America's greatest showmen, demonstrating how the Hi-De-Ho Man successfully bridged the worlds of swing, popular song and early rock 'n' roll.
