Product Notes

Seems like it's been forever ago since I started this project, and I can't tell you how happy I am to be finished! It has been a journey for sure, and I've learned so much along the way... God has taught me so many lessons about myself, and I've learned to depend on him more and more. My recurring prayer is that God will use me, and use me in the way that He wants, rather than according to my foolish heart. I hope you'll pray for me, and for this project. Sure, I want it to do well, but my primary goal is that it ministers to someone. I pray God uses it to go into the places that I can't physically go, and I pray it brings a little bit of light to someone who needs it, when they need it. I received a letter from a lady several years ago now, in regards to a project I cut with Sanctuary, a group I formed back in the late 90's. We made one CD, Hiding Place, and the letter was about that project. This lady was in a maximum security women's prison, and she had attended one of our concerts before her incarceration, and bought one of the CD's. I'll never forget what she wrote in that letter, and how it changed my perspective. She told me that she knew I would never be able to come into that cellblock and minister to the inmates, but, because of that CD, that is exactly what happened. They listened to her copy of that CD over and over, and told me she had cried herself to sleep many nights, praying and listening to that CD. To think that I was at home, probably asleep in my bed, totally oblivious that God was using something I had been a part of, at that very moment, to draw someone closer to Him! Btw, this lady is now filled with the Holy Ghost, and helps her husband operate the prison ministry IN OUR CHURCH! WOW! God is so awesome! I pray that this recording will be able to touch someone, and bring them closer to God. Will you please help me pray that prayer? In the meantime, I've had a lot of questions about the project, and I want to try to answer a few of them in this post. 1. What direction did you take with the project, in regards to style? In the past 25 years, I have tried on just about every style. Except for rap and hip-hop... you're welcome. ;) In singing background vocal in the studio, you have to be versatile enough to match the artist who is recording. Because of this, I've never really settled on a style of my own; I just conformed to what the song required. If the project needed R&B, my style became R&B, and so on... That's great for studio, but not so great for someone recording a project. You pretty much have to go with a particular style, or the songs don't have any real continuity. Question was, who was I, really? What was my style? I guess you could say I went back to my roots. I grew up singing in a little country church, and country gospel style is what I cut my teeth on, along with southern gospel. This recording is probably a little more modern, progressive country feel, in my opinion; at least that's what I was going for. I've done a lot of choir music with my church, PGPC, in the last decade, but this project is definitely not that. 2. Did you write any of the songs on the album? I wish, but unfortunately, no. There are some really great, well-written songs on this project. The songs on the album are all covers, originally sang by other artists. I went this route because it was more financial expedient to use tracks that were already produced, rather than go out of pocket for all original tracks with Nashville session players. As a songwriter, my goal is to get my songs produced by a professional producer, and that is going to cost big bucks. I want to use this record and the proceeds from it to finance my next project of all original songs, written by yours truly. 3. What songs did you include on the album? Track listing is as follows: 1. Brighter One 2. Baptism 3. There is a God 4. God Must Really Love Me 5. He Will Carry You 6. Tell Me One More Time 7. You Found Me 8. Tell Them That I Love Them 9. Surrender 10. Carry Me Away 4. What is your favorite song from the project? All these songs spoke to me in one way or another, but my favorite by far is the title track, Baptism. I knew I wanted to include this song from the first time that I heard it, because it actually describes events that I myself lived. One of my earliest memories is being baptized in the old pond in the meadow, back of my parent's house in central Mississippi. It was a Sunday afternoon, and when church was dismissed, we all headed to the pasture for the baptism. Our little country church didn't have a baptistry, so all the baptisms took place in that pond, and they were quite the event! JD Baptized Old PhotoThen Pastor Kenneth Rocko took me by the hand, and led me out into the water. I was around 5-6 years old, and I remember wondering if something amazing or supernatural would take place when he put me under the water. I determined to keep my eyes open when I went under, because I wanted to see. If something happened, I wanted to see it. Pastor Rocko tilted me back into the water, and I found myself staring up at a clear blue sky. He called my name, and then the name of Jesus, asking for the remission of all my worldly sins, and the whole world turned cold, brown and cloudy. I remember feeling his strong hands at my back, and as he brought me back up out of the water, my open eyes saw all the browns fade away, and when my face broke the water, I saw the clearest blue sky and the brightest sun you could ever imagine. Truth is, I was probably more dirty on the outside than when I waded into that old pond, covered in grime, with mud between my toes. But on the inside, I was cleaner than I had ever been. _____________________________________________________________________________ I want to take the time to give thanks to Jesus Christ. He has been, and always will be, the reason that I sing. All I can say is, He must really love me, because He has put up with so many mistakes out of me. I'm so thankful for His forgiveness, and His daily mercy. It truly is renewed every morning. I also want to say thanks to some very important people in my life. First of all, my beautiful wife, Krista. She is such a rock, and above all, a Godly example of what a Christian lady should be. Thank you for being faithful to me. My amazing kiddos, Alissa Kate and Matthew. You both bring a smile to my face every day, and I am so thankful for you! Alissa Kate, you did a great job on You Found Me BGV's! So thankful for my parents, Aaron and Debbie Davidson. You two have been the epitome of Godly parents, and I am grateful for the way I was raised. Thank you for being patient with me. My pastor, Rev. Mark Copeland. I can't even begin to tell how you have changed, shaped, and molded my life and direction. I owe you more than I will ever be able to repay. PGPC family: It is and has been a blessing to join and lead in worship with you all. Thanks for allowing me the privilege of exercising a calling, and believing in me, even when you didn't have a reason to. Special thanks to Tommy Parker and Jeffrey Vowell, who both spent tireless hours in the studio, helping me create this project. Two hardworking people, and I am ever grateful. Jeffrey, amazing job on the guitar overdubs! Matthew Hancock, great job on the graphics, and thank you so much for your frankness and honesty in important things. I appreciate your willingness to always sacrifice and help in whatever you put your hand to. Thanks so much to my sister, Holly Adcock, and my sister in the Lord, Alana Nunez, for the help with the BGV's on There Is a God. Great job, ladies! It is such a relief to have this project under wraps, and I am blessed to have been able to give of myself in something that I truly love to do. I pray the project is a blessing to you! Please let me know what you think in the comments section! God bless!
