Product Notes

3CD Set Exploring The Fascinations And Experiments Of The Legendary Joe Meek. 82 Tracks Of Far Outer Space Exploration, Ghoulish Goings On, Deathly Laments, Wild West Imaginings And Joe's Own Inimitable Home Demos! 57 Previously Unreleased Tracks! Many Never-Before-Heard Stereo Versions! All Tracks From The Legendary Tea Chest Tapes. Includes Detailed 'I Hear A New World' Sessions And Out-Takes. Features Hit Singles By John Leyton, Heinz, Mike Berry, Screaming Lord Sutch, The Outlaws And More. Sleevenotes By The Joe Meek Society's Craig Newton. Mastered At Western Star By Meek Aficionado Alan Wilson. Unique among the 1960s pop landscape, and facilitated by his own home studio set-up, Joe Meek pursued and expressed a passion for his countless hobbies through his hit records and studio productions. From the legendary 'I Hear A New World' sonic landscapes and the Tornados' global hit 'Telstar!' to several successful horror-themed records with Screaming Lord Sutch and his smash hit laments to both Buddy Holly and Eddie Cochran, Meek's fascinations were never far from his thoughts, often resulting in wildly imaginative and way ahead of their time recordings. Laden with sound effects, experimental electronics, eccentric lyrics and themes that often stretched the boundaries of what pop music could be in the early 1960s, 'A CURIOUS MIND' showcases both Meek's imagination and his mastery of the recording studio. A selection of themed demos shine light on hit songs that might've been, while sound effects and experimental electronic production sessions set him many years ahead of his contemporaries and rivals. The familiar hits are here, alongside lesser-known gems and material never before heard in stereo. Of particular interest is a disc of newly discovered 'I Hear A New World' versions and outtakes, including an early compilation/demo of the album that still sounds futuristic 65 years after it was recorded. A must hear for fans of that album, presented for the first time in pristine sonic quality, having previously only been heard as distorted vinyl dubs.
