Joshua is one of four so-called 'victory' oratorios Handel composed in the late 1740s, which commemorate the defeat of the 1745-46 Jacobite Rebellion. It takes as it's subject matter the biblical story of Joshua, who roused his people to a sequence of divinely aided victories. The oratorio remained a favorite with English and continental audiences until well after Handel's death. This recording, taken from live performances, features a superb cast of soloists supported by the Festspiel Orchester Göttingen, conducted from the harpsichord by Laurence Cummings.

Heroes When with Glory Burning
Indulgent Heav'n Hath Heard My Virgin Pray'r
As Cheers the Sun the Tender Flow'r
Sure I'm Deceiv'd, with Sorrow I Behold
Nations, Who in Future Story
Brethren and Friends, What Joy This Scene Imparts

Hail! Mighty Joshua, Hail!
Happy, Oh Thrice Happy We
Caleb, for Holy Eleazer Send
Shall I in Mamre's Fertile Plain
For All These Mercies We Will Sing
O Caleb, Fear'd By Foes, By Friends Ador'd
Place Danger Around Me

In Bloom of Youth, This Stripling Hath Achiev'd
See the Conqu'ring Hero Comes
See the Godlike Youth Advance! - See, the Conqu'ring Hero Comes!
Welcome! My Son, My Othniel, Good and Great
Oh! Had I Jubal's Lyre
While Life Shall Last
O Peerless Maid, with Beauty Blest
While Lawless Tyrants, with Ambition Blind
The Great Jehovah Is Our Awful Theme
