Hyperion's amazing Romantic Piano Concerto series, now in it's sixty first volume, continues to unearth rare gems of the nineteenth-century piano repertoire, rescuing them from obscurity and bringing them to glorious light with top flight performances by some of today's finest pianists. Döhler and Dreyschock were contemporaries, both child prodigies and both hugely admired in their day. Döhler's Piano Concerto is a lavishly ornamented virtuoso confection that requires a high-wire act from the soloist from start to finish. Dreyschock's Morceau de concert features allusions to several Beethoven works while his Salut à Vienne is a lighthearted but highly effective showpiece. These first recordings of all-but-forgotten works live again through the stylish artistry and technical brilliance of Howard Shelley and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.
