Lyric Russian fantasy is set in a remote 19th-century Carpathian village, where young Ivanko (Ivan Mikolajchuk) tries to move on from the loss of his first love (Larisa Kadochnikova) and his family, only to find himself yoked to his past with further tragedy to follow. Striking color sequences and bizarre occult scenes highlight Sergei Paradjanov's compelling adaptation of Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky's novel. 92 min.
