In this initial video release of the 1960 live television drama, Lee Marvin portrays Ira Hamilton Hayes, the Pima Indian Marine, one of the Mt. Surabachi, Iwo Jima flag-raisers. He was one of 5 survivors from his 45-five man platoon. Postwar, the much-decorated Hayes returned to Arizona. Succumbing to alcoholism and perhaps PSD, in 1955 he was found dead near an abandoned adobe hut. The coroner ruled death by exposure and alcohol poisoning.
