During WWII, government scientist Karl Rothe (Peter Lorre) discovered that his fiance (Renate Mannhardt) not only leaked his secrets to the Allies, but slept with the Gestapo agent (Karl John) who found her out. His subsequent rage-murder of her was whitewashed by the Nazis-but that couldn't assuage the compulsion to kill that had awakened inside him.
