Product Notes

Sharon Bercutt has always been a surprise and, I must say, it is a pleasure working with her music. After starting out in the early 70s as a piano student, she developed into a songwriter-composer I greatly respect. She will find corners in the music that seem to me unique and overlooked. Along with jazz, Sharon has been influenced by a wide variety of classical, modern and post-modern music. She has listened to Bill Evans and has been moved by him as have many of us. I know she admires Bud Powell and Thelonius Monk and their innovations, but Sharon has eclectic taste in the best sense of the word. This was a very happy recording session. The musicians felt these musical ideas were as unique and fresh as I believe they are. Enthusiasm filled the studio. Finally, listen to the solo piano as a sign-off at the end of this CD; you'll hear the soul of Sharon Bercutt. Kent Glenn Pianist/Composer/Arranger/Conductor, New York City I first met Sharon Bercutt many years ago when my career as a jazz drummer was just starting. At the time she was beginning her study of composition with our mutual friend Kent Glenn and writing her first pieces. I enjoyed playing 'Birdwing' and 'Subtle Matter' - which I subsequently recorded on Kent Glenn's LP 'Good for the Garden.' We've all come a long way. These eleven compositions reveal Sharon's elegance and clever use of jazz harmony, a reflection of her own, true artistic qualities and her good taste. There are natural melodies here that linger for a long time. Kent plays a highly fluid piano and writes particularly discerning arrangements. And he brings together fine musicians to play them. Tim Collins is melodically inventive on vibes, and Karolina Strassmayer, whom I've recently met and worked with, is a dynamite reed player, an innovator in the mainstream. There's a lot of spirit on this CD. It sounds to me like everyone is having a great time playing! Congratulations to Sharon on the release of her first CD. And to the listener, this is a pleasure. Enjoy! Paul Kreibich Drummer, Los Angeles Listen to the remarkable talents of Sharon Bercutt, Kent Glenn, Tim Collins and Karolina Strassmayer. Chuck Niles KLON Jazz Radio, Long Beach, CA.
