Product Notes
Chris Gantry - The Outlaw Bible / New original songs from the pen of legendary, Nashville songwriter Chris Gantry. Vocal, guitar and harmonica bring these songs up close and personal. - Chris Gantry is a walking contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction. Kris Kristofferson sang about him in "The Pilgrim," and Glen Campbell sang a song he wrote called "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife." - Chris pulled into Nashville nearly sixty years ago to write songs his own way, not to adhere to any pre-existing formula. And that's what made him an outlaw before the term had been used in his field. And write songs he did, for everyone from Johnny Cash to Reba McEntire. But the person you need to hear singing them is Chris Gantry. He once said that he doesn't have a country music bone in his body but being a thoughtful songwriter for artists who do happen to fall under that country category, well, that makes you about as outlaw as you can get. - His songwriting craft had been informed by the beat poets, by Dylan, by Richie Havens, and yes, by his friend Johnny Cash. Gantry had hung out backstage at both the Grand Ol' Opry and the Woodstock Festival, and both scenes suited his work. Woodstock hadn't even happened yet when his first album came out, and he's still writing thoughtful songs and making music his way. - Before it became a hit for Glen Campbell, "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife" happened to be the first song on the first Chris Gantry album, and it was just the beginning of a musical story that's still unfolding. The Outlaw Bible is just that, a personal musical statement from a musical outsider named Chris Gantry. Partly truth and partly fiction.
