In late-19th-century Paris, journalist and unrepentant cad Georges Duroy (George Sanders) determinedly seduces a string of women in his hunt for advancement in career and in station, leaving broken hearts and lives in his wake. His unending obsession with title and status, however, might have ironic repercussions.
