Jacques Audiard's western approaches the genre with a deliberate shift in tone, trading mythic heroism for introspection. Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly play brothers whose work as hired killers begins to weigh differently on each of them as the journey progresses. The film allows space for doubt, for hesitation, for the possibility that violence no longer provides clarity. It becomes a western about reconsideration, rather than conquest.
