Description
TIME is a video recording of the theatrical work conceived and composed entirely by Ryuichi Sakamoto in collaboration with Shiro Takatani of Dumb Type, following their landmark performance LIFE a ryuichi sakamoto opera 1999, which sold out approximately 40, 000 tickets at Nippon Budokan and Osaka-jo Hall in 1999, and after roughly four years of production beginning in 2017, the work premiered internationally in 2021 at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam, where Sakamoto served as an associate artist, earning widespread critical acclaim before it's Japan premiere on March 28, 2024, exactly one year after Sakamoto's passing, at the New National Theatre Tokyo; the work immerses the audience from the opening sound of rain in darkness into a dreamlike theatrical space where a gently rippling water surface, intricate projected visuals, and layered texts inspired by Natsume Soseki's Ten Nights of Dreams First Night, Kantan, and The Butterfly Dream explore the theme of time, with performances by Min Tanaka, Mayumi Miyata on sho, and Rin Ishihara, and with sound, installation, and visual art intersecting through light and water, now preserved as a recorded video experience, and this release comes with a deluxe booklet including Ryuichi Sakamoto's handwritten production notes in a 108 page format.
