Product Notes

We are really happy to present Umi's second album! This album was recorded in the newly built Soka Performing Arts Center in Southern California on a Hamburg Steinway concert grand. Produced by Grammy Award winning Matt Snyder. In this disc, Umi has included pieces from some of the greatest composers of classical music: Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Gershwin, and Debussy. We know that you will love this album and treasure it for years to come. Umi's notes: Dear Everyone, First, I would like to explain a little about the pieces selected in this disc and what they mean to me. I have included many pieces by Chopin, who is my favorite composer. Most of them are what I have been playing and working on for some time, and I love them all very much. The first pieces are some Etudes and Nocturnes. All of them have very contrasting emotions, characters, and style. I think that the first Etude is a very exciting way to start the CD, and that is why I have placed it in the beginning. The three Etudes have so much excitement that I have positioned the Nocturnes between them for a little peace and rest. Next, you will find Beethoven's 'Moonlight' Sonata in C Sharp Minor. It has three very different movements. The first movement has a relaxed yet tense feeling, with triplets in the right hand and octaves in the left hand all the way through. The right hand also holds a ringing, beautiful melody which is the main theme. The second movement seems happy, but it is more likely to show an impression of sadness and holding back tears. The third movement gives a rather angry, fast, and fiery feeling. The well-known piece, Clair de Lune, by Debussy, has a dreamy feeling and a beautiful mixture of harmonies. It really paints an image of moonlight and it's reflections on the water and creates a peaceful mood. The Mozart Sonata is very famous and pretty. The variations of the first movement are all beautiful yet quite different from one another. There are slow ones, fast ones, happy ones and sad ones, yet the childish mood of this piece is unchanging. The second movement, the Minuet and Trio, is very singing and sweet. The Turkish March, the last movement, is very fun and exciting. The last piece in this CD, Frederic Chopin's Scherzo No. 1, has especially been one of my favorite pieces to perform for a long time. It contains almost every element of music: virtuosity, beauty, lullaby, and lots of fun. 'Music is more beautiful when it is played for someone rather than yourself. ' This is how I feel about music, and I would like to tell you about the first time I felt this way. It happened in March 2013 when I traveled to Tohoku, the northern region of Japan where the Tsunami hit in March 2011. It was one of my most inspiring experiences with music. I visited the elementary schools there and performed piano for the children. It was such a touching experience. The cities near the coast were all gone except for the foundations of the houses and the bottom sections of walls. But even after the devastating Tsunami where thousands of people and homes were lost, the people there were so kind and warm and working very hard to bring back the cities. It made me think that no matter what hardship arises, I should keep working hard and never give up. I am very glad that I met all those wonderful people in Tohoku, and I wish them every kind of happiness possible. The name of the concert tour was "Kizuna" which means a strong connection between people in Japanese. I hope that I can reach out through this CD and create more "Kizuna"s in the world. In many places in the world, many people are having hard and difficult times. I hope the music in this disc can help people, even if just for a little bit. I recorded this album in the newly built Soka Performing Arts Center in Southern California on a Hamburg Steinway concert grand. I would like to thank Professor John Perry and Mrs. Mina Hirobe-Perry, my teachers. I would also like to thank my parents for supporting me and my passion for all these years. I had so much fun recording it, and I am very grateful for the wonderful opportunity to spread music to the world. I have named the title for this album "Music in Life" because we all need some music in our lives to feel happy, sad, reflect on memories, or simply listen to. I hope that the music in this CD brings you all of these things, and most of all I hope you enjoy it. Thank you so much! Love, Umi.
