This involving show business story depicts the rising decadence of post-WWI Germany. Boss Huller (Emil Jannings) is an aging trapeze performer who becomes enamored with young dancer Bertha-Marie (Lya de Putti). Huller abandons his family to be with Bertha-Marie, but soon finds his new romance beset by jealousy, deception, and, ultimately, murder.
