Product Reviews

This 2011 album features three attractive works by Steve Reich written between 2002 and 2010. These aren't pieces that break new ground for the composer, but they are bound to appeal to anyone who appreciates his earlier work. They are most reminiscent of his music from the late '70s and 1980s, one of his most productive and musically distinguished periods. WTC 9/11 recalls the sound and procedures of his landmark composition Different Trains (1988) for string quartet and tape, and is played by the Kronos Quartet, the group that premiered the earlier piece. The voices that Reich samples in this work include those of people either caught up in the experience of the 9/11 World Trade Center attack or reflecting later on its meaning, and he derives the melodies of the instrumental lines from the contours of their spoken words. The piece doesn't have the musical depth or layered emotional complexity of Different Trains, but its subject matter guarantees the power of its visceral impact. Mallet Quartet (2009) for two vibraphones and two marimbas, and Dance Patterns (2010) for two vibraphones, two xylophones, and two pianos revisit the bright, dancing sound world of pieces like Tehillim and Eight Lines. They employ similar harmonies and compositional devices and showcase Reich's characteristic infectious rhythmic momentum. They may not show the composer pushing at new boundaries the way the earlier works did, but even if they have a familiar sound, it's a terrific sound, one that's bound to engage anyone who has been beguiled by the energy and colors of Reich's music. The Kronos Quartet, So Percussion, and the six players on Dance Patterns deliver top-notch performances, and Nonesuch's sound is immaculate. The album also includes a bonus DVD of So Percussion performing Mallet Quartet. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi

Brooklyn-based ensemble So Percussion is a quartet of percussionists who play contemporary classical works as well as a mixture of music from other genres. They have collaborated with the International Contemporary Ensemble and the rock groups the Dirty Projectors and Project Jenny, Project Jan, as well as individual artists like composer/drummer Glenn Kotche and post-minimalist composer David Lang. So Percussion can be called experimental, not least because it has often made its own instruments for performance. In 2006, for example, three of the members fashioned a xylophone-like instrument out of aluminum pipes. The musicians also play teacups, walnut planks, flowerpots, and of course traditional percussion instruments. So's eclectic repertory takes in music by famous avant-garde composers, like John Cage and Iannis Xenakis. But So is more likely to perform works by Steve Reich, David Lang, Steven Mackey, and Paul Lansky, or music of its own devising. Indeed, So member Jason Treuting has written many compositions for the group, some of which it has recorded. So has made a number of recordings, most of them available from the labels Canteloupe and shhh Productions. So Percussion was formed in 1999 when the original members were students at Yale University in New Haven, CT. The group established its base of operations in Brooklyn. Founding members of the ensemble were Tim Feeney, Todd Meehan, Doug Perkins, and Jason Treuting. There were numerous changes over the years and the 2011 makeup was comprised of Treuting, Adam Sliwinski (from 2002), Josh Quillen (2006), and Eric Beach (2007). Lawson White was a member from 2003 to 2007. From 1999, So Percussion gradually built a reputation among experimental ensembles, especially in the New York City area, often appearing at concerts staged by Bang On A Can, an organization co-founded by composer David Lang. Lang filled So's first commission with his work, the so-called laws of nature (2002), which appeared on the group's first recording (2004) on the Canteloupe label. In 2005, So captured second prize and the special prize for concerto performance at the Luxembourg International Percussion Quartet Competition. With a string of acclaimed recordings of then-recent vintage, the So members founded their own label, shhh Productions, in 2007. The So players were engaged to co-direct a newly formed percussion department at Bard College-Conservatory of Music from fall 2011. Among So's more notable recordings is the 2011 Canteloupe CD of Paul Lansky's Threads. ~ Robert Cummings, Rovi
